Komodo dragon (varanus komodoensis) is a species
of lizard that only inhabits the islands of
Komodo, Rinca, Flores and Gili Motang of
Indonesia. They are member of the monitor lizard
family (varanidae) and only the largest living
species of lizard grow to an average of lenght
from 2 - 3 meters (6.6 to 9.8 feet). Komodo
National Park is covering the three major
islands include Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang and
Padar, and numerous smaller islands together
totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of
Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2.
Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta
Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring
the total surface area up to 2,321 km2
